Earth Day arrives each April, and with it comes global headlines and statistics about the future of the planet. But this annual observance is also a reminder of what matters locally, right here in Idaho, like:
- The quality of our air (and how we prevent inversions in places like the Treasure Valley).
- The shade generated by Boise’s aptly named “City of Trees.”
- The public lands we help to protect.
- What kind of communities we leave behind for our kids.
These are just a few of the ways we feel the impacts of our choices, and we will feel them long into the future. We also know that taking care of our planet often starts small, with the decisions we make at home — many times, right from our own rooftops.
Local Approach, Broader Impact
All of us at EGT Solar are proud to call Idaho home. We live here, we work here, we serve our neighbors in our very own communities, and we care deeply about what happens to the place we love. Because of this local connection, we know something important about Idaho: people are drawn to rooftop solar for many different reasons.
Some want to lower their monthly electric bills. Others are looking to gain energy independence. Still others would like to reduce their environmental impact. And some simply want to make a smart investment in their home or business. All of these reasons are valid.
Why Rooftop Solar Makes Sense In Idaho
For several years, Idaho has been growing quickly. With that growth comes the need to meet energy demand affordably without sacrificing our land or changing the character of the place we call home. We see rooftop solar as a smart solution.
Instead of using valuable land for large-scale ground-mounted systems, rooftop solar makes use of existing infrastructure. By using space that’s already built, we can preserve farmland and open space, maintain the natural beauty of our state, and generate power right where it’s used.
Benefits That Begin at Home
When Idaho homes and businesses choose solar, we all win. Individual property owners not only cut costs over the long term, but entire communities see benefits.
Whether it’s solar panels on Bogus Basin’s rental shop, at Whittier Elementary School, or on homes throughout the Treasure Valley, adopting clean energy means less reliance on fossil fuels, more power generated locally, reduced strain on the grid, less pressure to convert open lands to energy infrastructure, and improved air quality over time.
To put things into perspective, a typical residential solar system eliminates three to four tons of CO2 annually, which is the equivalent of planting over 100 trees, or taking a car off the road for 10,000 miles. Over the course of 25 years, just one system offsets a massive amount of carbon dioxide.
When you take those figures into account, EGT has helped to drastically reduce emissions by installing solar systems in towns and communities all over Idaho since our company’s inception nearly 20 years ago.
The Future We’re Helping to Build
Most Idahoans want the same things, despite our varied perspectives. For example, we want our state to remain a place where people can thrive. We want our kids to grow up with the same (or better) opportunities we had. And we want to protect what makes this place so special.
Earth Day reminds us that the choices we make today shape the communities — and the world — our kids inherit. Solar is one way to make choices that move us in a positive direction, right from our own rooftops. And we’re proud to be part of that progress by helping to build the future we want to see in Idaho.
